A golf stretching routine if done correctly can impact your golf swing, game and performance. There are many benefits to implementing a stretching routine for golf. Golf is an athletic event, and preparing your body to perform before you play, during play and even after a round is critical.
Using golf stretching (and not just hitting balls) as a warm up before you play or practice can make the difference between a below average round and a fantastic round. Just a few simple dynamic (movement) stretches before you hit a ball is all you need.
Stretches before you play need to mimic the movements of your golf swing. This entails movement (dynamic) stretches for your address, backswing and through swing positions. You can do these with a club or not, but warming up the muscles specific to the golf swing is key.
Stretching On The Golf Course
How many times have you made the turn and the wheels fell off? You lost your fluid, full backswing and tension started creeping in. This is death to your golf game. The ONLY way to prevent this from happening is to do some simple golf stretching exercises "on the course".
The backswing is the most common area to decline quickly throughout a round of golf. Also, the lower back getting tighter is a common occurrence. Stretching these specific muscles will prevent all the above from happening and enable you to play consistently for 18 holes.
Post-Golf Stretching
It is equally important to do some "after golf" cool down stretches. This will help blow out some of the lactic acid built up from playing and eliminate the occurrence of pain and stiffness hours after your round. The key areas are the glutes, lower back, and hips.
These areas are stressed the most during golf, and need some stretching before you leave the course. This type of stretching can be what we call static (holding) stretching. Isolate one area and hold the stretch for 15 seconds (twice).
Don't ignore your body if you want to play your best golf. Implement a golf stretching routine right now.
